Newark, NJ –- October 5, 2016 — Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Prudential Financial Chairman and CEO John Strangfeld, Greater Newark Convention & Visitors Bureau Board Chair Cathleen Lewis, and Newark 350 Initiative Chair Junius Williams will launch the “Unearthing Newark’s Treasures” walking trail through the City’s downtown at a ceremony on Friday, October 7, at 11 a.m., in Military Park in downtown Newark. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the New Jersey Historical Society at 52 Park Place near the park.

The new self-guided walking tour will explore the City’s 350 years of history by providing visitors and residents with a route that showcases architecture, historic people and places, sculpture, and monuments that define the City’s achievements. These include the Hahne’s Building, which is being renovated as a Whole Foods Store, the Krueger-Scott Mansion, and Military Park, where George Washington’s army camped during the American Revolution and Union troops were recruited for the Civil War.

Curated through collaboration between city officials, businesses, community members and cultural organizations, this historical walking trail and its mobile application highlight various gems throughout Newark, such as the first visual and performing arts high school in the U.S. – Arts High – whose graduates include Sarah Vaughan, Savion Glover and Melba Moore, and WBGO, one of the first school-board operated radio stations in the nation. This easy-to-follow, 5K walking trail throughout downtown Newark, made possible by a grant from The Prudential Foundation, provides a fitness-boosting opportunity filled with fun facts about one of our country’s most significant cities.

The 11 a.m. ceremony will be followed by self-guided walking tours, and a family-friendly fun event in Military Park until 8 p.m., which will offer live music, dance and step performances, face painting, Poké stops for Pokémon trainers of all ages, and more.
