The Challenge

Each year, every National Football League franchise nominates one of its players for the Man of the Year Award. In tandem, the nominee earns a donation to the charity of his choice from the local chapter of United Way of America. The United Way of Essex and West Hudson (UWEWH) called on Impact to help produce a seamless and highly publicized check donation ceremony. Brandon Marshall was the New York Jets nominee for this year, and UWEWH would bestow the check to his foundation, Project 375, which focuses on preventing and ending the stigma around mental illness. The check presentation ceremony is primarily a press event.

The Solution

Working pro-bono and with less than seven-days’ notice, Impact orchestrated a hugely successful news conference; outlets in attendance included CBS, SportsNet New York TV (SNY TV), The Star Ledger, and several others. In preparation, Impact connected with Marshall’s agent and employees and researched previous coverage to create unique pitch angles. We immediately created and distributed media alerts and a release through PRWeb, and tapped into our existing relationships with media professionals.

The Outcome

On the day-of, the Impact team helped set up logistics and arrange one-on-one interviews between broadcast reporters and Brandon Marshall. Impact’s efforts garnered more than 137,557 headline impressions nationally, an online audience of more than 193.3 million people, and a television audience of over one-half million viewers. Publicity for this pro-bono effort was valued at more than $300,000.
